The street sled speed scene
2017 would see the first street sled on the gravity land speed racing scene. These incredible speed machines have their beginnings in South America. They are basically the wheeled version of the skeleton ice luge and has a large group of participants south of the equator. Most of these incredible South American street sled builds are made exclusively from steel because of the extremely high priced aluminum in the region. The machines are built with a steerable front axle, hand operated belly style drag brake, with four and six wheel combinations that are common setups on these head first gravity missiles. These street sled pilots regularly run speeds in excess of 112 km/h 70 mph while road racing!
Diego Campo Gasparelo "street sled superman" sets WGSA world record!
Diego Campo Gasparelo (BRA) would arrive at the 2017 L'Ultime Descente Speed Challenge in Les Eboulements, Quebec to debut his street sled to the gravity land speed racing world that weekend. Diego, known as one of the top street sled racers in South America, made the trek to Canada from his hometown of Curitba, Brazil on an important assignment, to establish the first WGSA street sled world record. He would do just that and WOW the gravity land speed racing community in the process!
Gasparelo would make eight incredible jaw dropping passes at the 2017 event and would pilot his street sled missile into the gravity land speed racing history books. He would make all but one pass in the excess of 141.84 km/h 90 mph all weekend. Knowing he was the only sled in attendance he would be the world record holder and did so setting the bar with an absolutely phenomenal run to the timing lights posting a speed of 159.29 km/h 98.97 mph! Diego had just missed the Century milestone by a little more than a mile an hour! We look forward to seeing this "Street Sled Superman" in the WGSA Century Club at the next gravity land speed challenge. Congratulations to Diego Campo Gasparelo on his incredible speed performances and his new WGSA street sled world record. GO FAST
